THE OLD MAN OF STORR - SKYE ISLAND
DIFFICULTY:
Technically and physically it can be qualified as moderate difficulty for those who practice hiking, only on specific dates such as in summer. However, for hikers who are accustomed to the mountains or who practice trekking regularly, it is an easy route in both directions. However, to go to the mountains, as always, requires a good physical preparation. The appreciation of the difficulty of the routes should always be taken as guidelines, since they always depend on the state of physical form in which each one is at the time of facing each one and any of the routes.
LOCATION OF HOME: PORTREE
START POINT: TROTTERNISH AREA - PORTREE MAIN ROAD TO STORR STAFFIN-PARKING
NORTH OF THE ISLANDS OF SKYE - ARCHIPELAGO OF SCOTLAND
REAL TIME OF MOVEMENT TRAVEL: 1h: 25 '
HOW TO GET:
The Isle of Skye can be reached by car crossing the Kyle of Lochalsh bridge, with previous stop to visit the famous Elian Donan Castle, or by ferry from Glenelg and enjoy the sea otters that are distinguished on both sides. Once on the Isle of Skye, we head towards the city of Portree "the capital of the Island", and from here we continue along the main road from Portree to Staffin A855, which runs along the coast in a northerly direction, which will take us 10 , 8 km to the Parking of Storr - Trotternish area, which is on our left margin, where we will park our vehicle to start the route. The parking lot is not very big, so in summer seasons it fills up very quickly, but there is an extensive "Layby" hard shoulder on the same road that continues from the parking lot entrance, where we can leave the car, also properly parked, as It happened to us.
The other option is to take public bus 57A Go Skye, which regulate during the summer months, from Portree to the same parking Storr. It is recommended to reserve a place on the web. So choose the option that suits us best and covers our needs.
Coordinates from the Parking of Storr: N57 ° 29.858 'W6 ° 09.552'
Coordinates from the "Layby" shoulder of the road, which was our starting point: N57 ° 29.891 'W6 ° 09.505'
INTRODUCTION:
Prodigious and amazing semicircular route made on the Isle of Skye. A route that will transport us to a 300-meter thick sandwich of around 24 layers of volcanic rock formed between 61 and 55 million years ago, and will take us into the true essence of these imposing mountains of the Old Man of Storr and the Needle Rock . A monumental mountain and sharp needles or pinnacles of Cobalt that will leave us truly surprised and amazed. A landscape worthy of admiration, and if not tell Harry Potter, who shot some of his films in this solemn spot. It is one of the most significant and fundamental places that you can not miss if you go to Scotland. With regard to the layout of the route, the ideal route would be to make the circular route that includes about 8.4 km, going up to the same Storr, which is the highest point of the route, with its 719 m altitude, to enjoy, the best of the best, of this place. I added a link to the complete route in case you have the chance to go to the Isle of Skye: Complete route for Travel by Free We, for lack of time, carry out the commercial and traditional route that most people visit, enjoying the key and most important points of the route: The Old Man of Storr, The Needle Rock, and the Hill Old Man of Storr, one of the most valuable points of the route, although, it is true, we added a variant, bypassing and penetrating the heart of this impressive mass of the Old Man of Storr that really captivates us. So, if you do the traditional route, I recommend you follow my track on the GPS to also enjoy this beautiful variant. Although the threat of rain is permanent in these lands, the route is quite easy and comfortable, but it is advisable to wear good mountain boots because there are many puddles and areas somewhat swampy, as we enter a green world completely caked, by the constants rains. On the other hand, being so close to the coast, as we gain height the views are increasingly impressive, so you never stop taking pictures, either with the camera or with the eye. It's really brutal, as if you were in the middle of a National Geopraphic documentary, and in the background we have the North Sea, completely velvety with agglomerated clouds. Landscapes of very explosive prints that will always be stored in our retina. The only black point that we will see at the beginning of the route and in this area, is the massive logging, surely one of the main sources of income of this country to survive, and as it rains so much, it is very easy and fast to reforest. For the rest, it is a highly recommended route to make for this amazing and fantastic archipelago. A completely green world, but really green.
In the route we have considered the following three (3) points as the most remarkable:
1. The Old Man of Storr Hill, 517 m
2. The Needle Rock
3. The Old Man of Storr
And the whole tour in general, which has been really fabulous and captivating. A true natural treasure highly recommended for all hikers and nature lovers, who awaits us all to enjoy and activate energetically.
DESCRIPTION:
As indicated in the section on how to arrive, we will park our vehicle in the Parking of Storr - Trotternish area, which is on our left margin - WP: 01 Coordinates from Storr Parking: N57 ° 29.858 'W6 ° 09.552', and in case to be complete, we will leave it on the "Layby" shoulder on the same road that continues from the parking entrance - WP: 02 Coordinates of the "Layby" shoulder of the road, which was our starting point: N57 ° 29.891 'W6 ° 09.505 '. From this point we will begin to walk in SO - Southwest direction, a few meters, looking for the access entrance - WP: 03, where we will see some informative panels, and an access door to the route. We will follow the track or path that ascends, gradually, in a NW - Northwest direction, and in 650 m we will reach a natural viewpoint - WP: 04, where we can enjoy extraordinary views of Lake Leathan, Loch Leathan in Scots. From the beginning of the route, we will see, at all times, our objective and outstanding points of the route, which will intensify more our desire and goals to achieve them. From the viewpoint, in 70 meters, we will arrive at another cattle gate - WP: 05, which we will have to open and close properly to continue. We will continue ascending, about 175, and we will arrive to another gate of cattle of step - WP: 06. Likewise in the previous door, we will open and close it to be able to continue acceding. We will climb, about 80 m to reach another natural viewpoint - WP: 07, where it is worth stopping a few moments, to take a break, and enjoy all this brutal nature. We will continue ascending progressively. The layout is quite easy to follow, where slopes alternate with flat areas. Then, as you get closer to the Old Man of Storr, the terrain becomes greener and steeper. Many paths are differentiated, some with more stones, and others with more mud. So, we must access the path that we see more viable, to the taste of each one. We will arrive at another gate of cattle passage - WP: 08, where we will proceed in the same way as in the previous doors. From this point, we will continue ascending about 350 m, in a NW- Northwest direction, until our 1st Common point of the route - WP: 09, where we will have a fork in paths. We are right below and at the root of the Old Man of Storr - Awesome !. We will continue ascending straight on the right in the same direction NW - Northwest, following the track. We will also pass under the Needle Rock, which will be on our left margin. Without realizing it, delighting this spectacular landscape, we will arrive at our 2nd common point of the route - WP: 10, where we will continue, a few meters, in a north direction, then we will turn off in the NE - Northeast direction to reach our 1st notable point of Route: Old Man of Storr Hill, 517 m - WP: 11. Highest point of our route, and strategic position to enjoy the breathtaking views that this great corner offers us, such as the Island of Raasay, the mountain range of the Cuillins, the Loch (lake) Leathan, the Storr "719 m", the colossal Pinnacle Sanctuary of the Old Man of Storr and the Needle Rock, really of incomparable beauty. From this point, we retrace our steps, through the same route, to the 2nd common point of the route - WP: 10, where we start our variant, heading South, facing towards our 2nd notable Point of the Route: The Needle Rock - WP: 12. Standing just below the amazing needle or pinnacle of cobalt What a joy! We continue walking in the same direction South, and in less than 150 m we will reach our 3rd and last remarkable point of the Route: The Old Man of Storr - WP: 13. We had reached the true heart of this immensity What a barbarity and preciousness !. We walked and skirted all its layout and drawing, brutally enjoying these colossal rocks and walls. Actually, erosion has done an impressive job here over the centuries. We will arrive at the WP: 14, and instead of going straight on the path on the right - which would have been the usual, we veered off to the left in order to explore and enjoy more of these beautiful figures. Independently, both variants will take us to WP: 15, where we will deviate to the left. We will descend cautiously, and especially if the terrain is wet from the rains, and in 275 m approximately we will reach our 1st Common point of the route - WP: 09. From here, we will follow step by step on our tracks, and for the same itinerary that we made in the beginning until reaching the "Layby" shoulder on the same road that continues from the parking entrance - WP: 02, where we park our vehicles, ending this great route on the Isle of Skye.
My best Congratulations to the whole group: Ángel, Mª Jesús, Lola, and of course I also include myself José Luis. We have behaved, once again, as true friends, and splendid companions of route. We have enjoyed a great route all four together, captivated by an extraordinary and unusual corner kept in the beautiful town of Portree, which has given us nature and we will never forget, because we already have it in our hearts.
Congratulations and congratulations to all!
As always: Our goal is to reach us, but to enjoy the way
Until the next friends
