The impressive Cliffs of Moher in the west of Ireland are one of the most famous images in the country. They are at the south-western end of the region of The Burren (literally, stony place), an amazing karst landscape that also contains some dolmens and that we visit briefly after this little excursion up the cliffs.

These cliffs are between 120 and 214 meters high and have an undulating appearance for 8 km. vertical walls over the waters of the Atlantic. There is a path that runs through them, although we did a short stretch to the Visitor Center and turned back because a storm was threatening. We leave the vehicle on a small dirt road to the left after passing said Center and after crossing a gate we take a path that goes down a bit until we get closer to the ocean. Right away we have the first views of the extraordinary stone walls and we are ascending towards the beginning of the cliffs.

Once at the top, the panorama is breathtaking, the view of the cliff merges in the distance with the sea and a multitude of birds fly and perch on its walls. According to the guides, some 30,000 birds of more than twenty species live in this protected area, including the Atlantic puffin on the small island of Goat, although there are also hawks, seagulls, cormorants or crows. Quite a show.

Although the path goes a safe distance from the cliff, there is some section that gets closer, so you have to be extremely careful. The climate is very changeable, so the wind and also the landslides can cause some displeasure. About eight people die there a year and the truth is, after seeing people taking photos and selfies right on the edge, I am not surprised. There are posters warning of the danger in the area and in the most visited part, near the Interpretation Center, a few years ago a wall was made of 1.5 m stone slabs. more or less.

In this area we find O'Brien's Tower, where the cliffs reach their maximum height, 214 m. Nearby is the Interpretation Center, which we did not visit and soon we turned back, as the weather was getting very ugly. We turned around and along the same path we returned to the starting point after having enjoyed a walk through a wonderful place.

Moving time: 1h 15 min.
