The ascent begins on the outskirts of the town of Bourg-d'Oisans. The route that takes place in the race is (almost) always the same, despite the fact that the last kilometers pass through the town, which would allow, in theory, to make certain variations and despite the fact that there is another way of arrival at the station that leaves from the main road about 5 kilometers from the finish line, that is, with a less careful asphalt and a more hostile orography for the presence of the public.

Undoubtedly, the most famous characteristic of this climb, in addition to its hardness, are the 21 horseshoe curves, numbered in descending order from the base to the top and on whose signs, which announce the number of the curve, are You can also read, in chronological order, the name of one of the winners at the top of Alpe d'Huez. After the dispute of the 2003 edition, the number of winners in the Alpe d'Huez exceeded that of curves, so it was decided to add one more name to each curve, starting again at 21 again.

Another peculiarity of these curves is that, in themselves, they have almost no unevenness, being the most complicated points just at the exit of them, where the road becomes steep again. This peculiarity constitutes a double-edged sword for cyclists or cyclists since, although it provides only 2 or 3 seconds of respite, it considerably alters the pedaling cadence.

The total unevenness that is saved is 1073 m and a length of 13.1 km, with an average slope of 8.2% and a maximum slope of 11.5% .1

Kilometer 1: By percentage it is the hardest of the entire climb, with an average slope of 10.5%, although most of it is at 11%. It begins on the outskirts of Bourg-d'Oisans, just before crossing a small bridge over the Romanche River. Then you turn left and it is at that moment where the ascent really begins. The curve is framed at this kilometer, which is reached by leaving the stone wall on the right.
Kilometers 2 and 3: The winding begins. Three curves, 20, 19 and 18 and a total drop of 9.4%. The vegetation is still abundant and the environment is never quite suffocating. At kilometer 3 you reach the town of La Garde, at an altitude of 930 meters. Here are curves 17 and 16, the total percentage of the kilometer being 8.4%
Kilometers 4 and 5: Kilometer 4 is the "smoothest" up to that moment, its total percentage is 7.7% and there are curves 15 and 14. At 5 you reach the town of La Ribot, at 1091 meters . The unevenness here is 8.8% and there are two other curves, 13 and 12. After passing this town, the vegetation loses its lushness and this favors, together with the kilometers already saved and the increasing altitude, the feeling of fatigue.
Kilometers 6 and 7: Again the slope is smoothed, remaining at 7.2% at kilometer 6 to find ourselves in the next thousand meters with the hardest ramps, by percentage, of the ascent, reaching 12% in three different sections with a 9.5% cumulative kilometer percentage. In the first kilometer there are two more curves, 11 and 10. Turn 9 joins two of the sections at 12% and Turn 8 is at the exit of the third section.
Kilometer 8 and 9: From this moment the landscape becomes increasingly hostile, with much less vegetation than at the base of the climb. The ascent becomes more monotonous because in these two thousand meters only two curves are overcome, the 7, almost at the beginning of kilometer 9 and the 6, almost at the end of kilometer 9. The first has a percentage of 8% and the second of the 7.2%.
Kilometer 10, 11 and 12: These three kilometers link the town of Huez with the ski resort that gives its name to the climb. They are very uniform in their percentages, 8.5%, 8.6% and 8.5% respectively. Only at the beginning of kilometer 12, at the exit of Huez, there is a ramp at 11%, after turn 5, a few meters further on is turn 4. At kilometer 11 there are curves 3 and 2 for, finally At kilometer 12 you will find curve number 1, the last of the climb.
Kilometer 13: It runs entirely through the streets of the ski resort, its unevenness is 4.3%, much smoother than the rest of the climb. The finish line is almost flat.

The Col de Sarenne is a neck of the Alps that culminates at an altitude of 1999 m. It crosses the Grandes Rousses massif and separates the Haut-Oisans to Alpe d'Huez.

Classified 2nd category, the pass was climbed by the Tour de France in 2013 for the first time in its history during the 18th stage, after a first climb of Alpe d'Huez. This rise generates controversy due to the dangerousness of its decline and its environmental impact
