Itinerary description
A splendid three-day ramble that takes you from one quaint village to another through the rolling hills of the White Peaks area. However, the picture-perfect quentessential British countryside encountered en route more than makes up for the lack of relief. Also, you likely experience piece and quiet as the crowds are drawn to the famous peaks in the North. Starting point is Matlock, a Victorian town made famous by its hot springs. From here, you will cross open fields and dales towards the Medieval mining town of Monyash: grooves of sharpened mining tools in the base of the cross on the village green remind us of this past. Make sure to stop at the Bulls Head for a pint. From Monyash, the route gains elevation and soon gives way to spectacular views towards Miller`s Dale, a few miles ahead. From this point onwards, the trail frequently crosses wooded dales towards the village of Peak Forest. From here towards nearby Castleton, the landscape becomes more rugged, crossing large swaths of moorland against a backdrop of peaks. From Castleton, the trail snakes up the splendid vantage point of Mam Tor, before descending towards the train station of Edale.
