Itinerary description

This walk takes you from the small village of Tanarrio on a circular walk below the eastern massif of the Picos de Europa. It follows tracks, footpaths and the occasional stretch of quiet road. Navigation is fairly simple although one path became a little overgrown. You walk through oak woodland and open meadows. The views of peaks above and beyond are spectacular. You'll see plenty of Griffon vultures and may see an Egyptian vulture.
The highest part of the walk is Pena de Oviedo where there is a fuente nearby. Its worth a detour to take in the summit. When we were there we were accompanied by Swallowtail butterflies and a couple of Purple Emperors swooped down from the tops of the oaks just below the summit. A huge range of butterfly species are seen throughout the walk.
The village of Sebrango is a very sad place as it was evacuated in 2013 after a large landslide. Perhaps the most picturesque village of the walk is Mogrovejo with its famous tower. There is a small museum and a couple of bars where you can take a well deserved break.
