Greece, Halkidiki, Sithonia: Nikiti - Agios Nikolaos

A walk from Old Nikiti, using mainly forest tracks to cross the hills to visit the small town of Agios Nikolaus (Santa Claus), almost on the other side of Sithonia.

Wandeling van Oud Nikiti langs hoofdzakelijk veld- en boswegels over de heuvels naar het kleine stadje Agios Nikolaus (Sint-Niklaas), bijna aan de andere kant van Sithonia.

In Nikiti, at the crossing with traffic lights on the main road, turn off to the Old Village (hillside) and find a parking place along the roadside.

In Nikiti rij je op de hoofdweg aan het kruispunt met verkeerslichten richting Old Village (dus naar het binnenland) en zoek je een parkeerplaatsje langs de straat.

Walk northwards up the street, at a road junction bear left as the road narrows and continues to gain height, passing through the older quarter of Nikiti. Eventually the road becomes paved and quite steep as it climbs up past the fine church and the graveyard.

Wandel noordwaarts de straat omhoog, voorbij een kruispunt en aan de volgende splitsing hou je links aan terwijl de weg smaller wordt en hoogte wint. Je wandelt door de oudste wijk van Nikiti. Uiteindelijk krijg je een geplaveide weg onder de voeten en gaat het verder steil omhoog langs de mooie kerk en het kerkhof.

At the crossroads beyond the church carry straight on up the hill on the unmade road past the telecomtower. Do look occasionally back for a view over the village. The road climbs up through trees and more open ground to reach the ridge in about 500m.

Aan het kruispuntje verderop ga je rechtdoor verder de heuvel omhoog, voorbij een telecom mast op de onverharde weg. Kijk af en toe eens achterom voor een mooi zicht over Nikiti. De weg klimt verder omhoog door de bomen en meer open land om na ongeveer 500m de heuveltop te bereiken.

Turn left along the ridge track that climbs to the north. The route enters an olive grove in much more open ground and continues to the north to arrive at a junction with a wooden bench and shelter (photo 11).

Ga links langs de heuvelkam, die verder noordelijk omhoog loopt. De route loopt door een olijfgaard in meer open landschap en gaat verder noordelijk naar een splitsing met een houten bank onder een afdakje (foto 11).

Continue straight on at the junction north through open woodland and fields. After 800m a junction is reached with a road to the right, signposted Agios Nicolaus (photo 12). Follow this road. Three hundred metres from the junction a small church (Agios Georgeos, (photo 15) is reached. There are nice sheltered picnic tables if a stop is in mind.

Ga aan de splitsing rechtdoor, verder door open bosland en door velden. Na 800m kom je aan een afslag naar rechts met een bordje 'Agios Nicolaus'. Volg deze weg die je na 300m langs een klein kerkje brengt (Agios Georgeos, zie foto 15). Er is daar ook een fraaie, overdekte picknicktafel voor als je aan een pauze toe zou zijn.

Leaving the church the track crosses a small plateau and then begins to descend quite steeply towards olive groves ahead. The village of St. Nikolaus, can be seen over to the right, as the descent continues, on a shady woodland track.

Voorbij het kerkje doorkruist de track een klein plateau en begint dan vrij steil af te dalen in de richting van de olijfgaarden. Het dorpje Sint-Niklaas is rechts zichtbaar terwijl je verder afdaalt langs de schaduwrijke bosweg.

Eventually you reach a junction (photo 17) with a small blue Eklissaki (chapel). Turn right to arrive at a spring and water trough. The track now continues southerly and climbs up to the outskirts of the village, which can be seen on the left. Go left to visit Agios Nikolaus (there are a few tavernas on the nice village square) and return afterwards to this junction for the return route to Nikiti.

Uiteindelijk kom je aan een kruispunt (foto 17) met een kleine blauwe Eklissaki (kapel). Ga rechtsaf voorbij een bron en drenkplaats. De weg loopt verder zuidwaarts en klimt naar de rand van het dorp, dat je links ziet liggen. Ga linksaf om het rustige dorpje te bezoeken: Agios Nikolaus heeft een fraai dorpspleintje met enkele tavernes. Keer daarna naar deze afslag terug voor de terugweg naar Nikiti.

The road passes through a mature olive grove. Follow the rough chalk track past soms shacks and round to the left. A narrow track now climbs up the slope to the left to meet another track. The track was rather overgrown when we were there in june 2015!

De weg loopt door een oude olijfgaard. Volg het ruwe kalksteenpad langs wat koterij en bocht naar links. Een smal pad loopt de helling omhoog naar links en sluit aan op een ander pad. Toen wij hier begin juni 2015 wandelden, waren de paden nogal overgroeid met gras en onkruid.

The path climbs into the wood. On entering the wood and climbing to a flat grassy area the way ahead is blocked by dense vegetation, so the path swings round almost 180 degrees to climb out of the valley.

Het pad stijgt de bossen in en komt op grassiger gebied. Vooruit is alles dichtgegroeid, waardoor het pad bijna 180° slingert om uit de vallei te klimmen.

The track climbs east for 120m or so, then swings west to climb up to ploughed fields on the plateau above. Follow the north eastern edge of the field round to find a farm access track leading west.

De track klimt een 120m oostwaarts, slingert dan naar het westen en klimt naar bewerkte velden op het hoger liggende plateau. Volg de noordoostelijke rand van het veld, waardoor je aansluit op een boerenwegel naar het westen.

This track soon joins another good sandy track leading south to arrive at the junction you may recognise from your way up. From here retrace your steps to the left to Nikiti.

Deze weg vervoegt al snel een andere zanderige weg die zuidwaarts loopt en op een splitsing uitkomt die je allicht herkent vanop de heenweg. Ga linksaf en volg de heenweg terug tot in Nikiti.

Due to the narrow trails, do not try this walk with a buggy or wheel chair.

Door de smalle paden is deze wandeling niet mogelijk met kinderwagen of rolstoel.

This walk was once signposted with "Poseidon markers" (the trident or Greek letter 'psi') nailed to trees or painted in red on rocks, but unfortunately the signposting is not well maintained and some of the signs have dissapeared. You will need a map and/or your gps for an easy completion of this trip. The OSM Map in my Garmin was fairly good.

Deze tocht was ooit bewegwijzerd met "Poseidon-tekens" (de drietand of de griekse letter 'psi') op bordjes op de bomen genageld of op de rotsen geverfd. Jammer genoeg is de bewegwijzering slecht onderhouden en is ze deels verdwenen. Je hebt dus een goede kaart en/of je GPS nodig om de route probleemloos te volgen. Ik had Open Street Map in mijn Garmin en die kaart voldeed vrij goed.
