Itinerary description

An easy walk from the village of Ouranopolis along the coast to the border of monk-republic Athos.

We parked our car at the large parking lot at the eastern end of the village (fenced en guarded. Not free, but reasonably priced). Af first we went back to the village to take a look at the tower of Prosphorion. Ouranopolis is surprisingly vivid with a lot of shops and tavernas. Then we walked back east along the road, with the sea on the right.

About 1.2km past the parking lot, look for a narrow path to the right, close to an infoboard and a long, white stone drinking trough. This somewhat overgrown path brings you in about 50m to the beach. The route now continues along the beach towards a point where some large rocks protude into the sea.

About 100 m before these rocks the path climbs to the top of the steep cliff on the left, via steps which zig-zag up the hillside. The path continues to follow the coast through the bush and woodland on the clifftop. There is a resting bench and you arrive at a distance of about 350m further on to a junction.

Our plan was to follow a path to the right (as shown on our map), down to the beach and further on to the Athos borders. Unfortunately the path was a dead end: looks like things were rearranged after a bushfire a few yeas ago: fences were built, some olive trees planted and possible pathways are heavily overgrown... We tried a few promising routes down, but eventually decided to take no risks and we returned to the junction.
(To keep this gps-trail usefull, I deleted the part with the erratic track registered during our one hour fruitless search for a safe path down to the beach)

Back at the junction the other well passable path in northerly direction came out on the dirttrack to the Moni Zygou archeological site. To the right, it leads to the ruins of Frangokastro castle, or the Monastery of Zygos.

This was an important monastery of Mount Athos, but was abandoned in the 12th century. A Frank lord with his soldiers settled in the monastery to plunder the monasteries of Mount Athos (hence the name Frangokastro Castle) until he was forced to leave the area. The monastery is currently undergoing a major archaeological dig and restoration.

Immediately opposite the monastery is the border fence. Notices here inform people that no access is allowed, except with the appropriate visa, and no access under any circumstances for women.

To continue the walk, follow the (dry) riverbed to the right of the archeological site for about 100m, where you will find at the left side a kind of stairway out of the riverbed. Join the path to the right and continue uphill, next to the (fenced) excavation site. Ignore the first vague path to the right an go left at the next junction. After 150m it turns sharply to the right and uphill, away from the excavation site. At the next junction, ignore the overgrown track to the right and go left.

Soon you reach cultivated land with olive groves and gardens and you reach the road that leads to the right, back to Ouranopolis. Follow the outward coastal path to return to the village centre.

--------------------

Due to the steep and narrow trails, do not try this walk with a buggy or wheel chair.

The walk to Moni Zygou was part of a once signposted route. The first 2km you can still find some "Posseidon markers" (the trident or Greek letter 'psi') nailed to trees or painted in red on rocks, but further on nothing is left. You will need a map and/or your gps for an easy completion of this trip. The OSM Maps in my Garmin were of limited use in the middle part of this route: paths were very overgrown or not present at all.
